Importance of a strong core

Recently I have suffered a disc herniation which as you can imagine is lot of  fun. I do have a history of a slipped disc so no real surprise but it was annoying as this has not happened for a very long time. Why am I telling you all this? Well, to make a point. You see, the sports physician who I was sent to for a consultation told me I should join pilates or yoga class as I need to strengthen my core. I paid $150 for this ! This good doctor was overweight and could not even do one sit up. He made assumptions without knowing anything about me.

After some remedial massage, acupuncture, traction and recovery exercises I am pretty much back to ‘normal’. This picture was taken today, i.e. one week after the injury.

The point I am making here is I can still hold a ‘real man’ plank even with some degeneration in my spine. I could do this 20 years ago and I can do it today and plan to be able to do it 20 years later. If you let yourself go, get soft in the middle, put on weight and you get a similar injury you are going to be in for a long recovery and it is a struggle to get your core strong again.

Incidentally this is really good exercise for combat / contact sports. You should be able to take a hit without throwing up. Hai !
